Your teen is at the doctor's office. Before you've said a word, the doctor comes in and asks them directly: "So, what's been going on?"

They take it. They explain what's been going on and can answer follow-up questions on their own. They give a short answer but mostly wait for me to fill in the details. They look straight at me. I end up doing most or all of the talking.

A waiter brings the wrong order to the table. Your teen ordered it. The waiter walks away.

They flag the waiter down themselves, explain the mistake, and sort it out. They tell me quietly and wait for me to say something. They say nothing. They'll just eat whatever came.

Something happened at school that felt unfair - a grade, a comment from a teacher, a situation that needs to be addressed. What does your teen do?

They handle it. They go to the teacher themselves - maybe nervous, but they do it. They tell me about it and ask me to email the teacher or come in. They either blow up about it at home or just swallow it and say nothing.

You're at an event and someone your teen doesn't know asks them: "So what do you want to do after high school?"

They answer, hold eye contact, maybe even ask something back. They hold their own. They give a short answer and look at the floor or their phone. They smile awkwardly and look to me to rescue them.

There's a real conflict with a friend - not just surface level. Something that needs to be addressed. What does your teen do?

They bring it up directly. It's awkward, but they go back and work it out. They pull back and wait to see if the friendship repairs itself. They either ghost, blow up, or ask me to step in.
